Amazon Trade-In Program Extends to Kindles and Other E-Readers

If you plan on upgrading your e-book reader, look no further than Amazon as the online retailer has extended its Trade-In program to allow people to trade-in their old Kindles and other e-readers. Trading in such devices is valued anywhere between $18 and $135 depending on the model and condition of the e-book reader.

After having your old e-reader appraised and traded, Amazon will send you a gift card corresponding to the value of your device, which you can use in Amazon.com to purchase other items, or even hold on to it until the retailer releases the Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire. Do not worry about additional costs as Amazon also offers free shipping.

Kobo Vox Formally Unveiled; Lets You Create Book Clubs

Kobo officially shows off its latest e-book reader, the Kobo Vox, which it claims as the “world’s first social e-reader.” By “social,” Kobo is not pointing to the Vox’s integration with Facebook, as most recent e-book readers have. The Kobo Vox comes with a social e-reading platform collectively called “Reading Life,” which enables users to form book clubs, where members read a single title at the same time and discuss about it. Also included in the platform is the Kobo Pulse that lets users find and join discussion of passages and pages as they read a book along. It is also integrated with Facebook Ticker, so expect messages such as “Kristoffer turned a page in Moondogs — 2 seconds ago.” (Yes, I am currently reading that  Alexander Yates novel. It’s a good one.)

The Kobo Vox also gathers stats such as reading time by title and overall, number of pages turned, total number of titles downloaded, and even awards received.

As for the specs, in case you missed it, the e-book reader features a 7-inch LCD with 1024 x 600 resolution, 8GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, and six hours of battery life.

Pre-orders are now accepted, with a suggested retail price of $200.

Bookeen Cybook Odyssey E-Book Reader Coming to

French e-reader company Bookeen is preparing to release the Cybook Odyssey e-book reader, which features its High Speed Ink System. Specs include a 6-inch modified Pearl E-Ink screen with Neonode zFoce touch layer and full motion capabilities (giving users the tablet-like experience), 800MHz Texas Instruments Cortex A8 processor, video play back, and WiFi radio for downloading content and web browsing abilities. The device has been demoed months ago, showing its fast display and how users can drag images around.

The Bookeen Cybook Odyssey is expected to be shipped in Europe a few weeks from now. No word on the price just yet.

Canadian Retailer Leaks Kobo Vox E-Reader

Kobo is attempting to steal the thunder from Amazon and Barnes & Noble when it comes to 7-inch LCD e-reader domination. News about the Kobo Vox has been around since it was filed in the FCC weeks ago, but details about the device has only been sprouting out just now.

The Kobo Vox was accidentally(?) leaked on Canadian retailer website Future Shop, where its specs were revealed. The listing has since been removed, but you gotta applaud the quick eyes and copy-paste powers of the netizens. The device features a 7-inch LCD with 1,024 x 600 resolution, 8GB of internal storage, a microSD slot, and an expected battery life of up to six hours. A number of Kobo features are integrated such as Pulse, Reading Life, and the ability to sync content with other devices that have Kobo reading app installed on them. The reader supports several e-book file formats, but not images and video. Sorry about that, graphic novel enthusiasts.

But with a name that comes from the Latin word for “voice,” the Kobo Vox may have something else up its sleeve, as Future Shop refers it as the ability to “connect highlighted words to audio.”

The website says the Kobo Vox will cost $250 Canadian, but that may change come actual release.
